Winter is upon us and some parts of New Zealand are experiencing below-freezing temperatures, including parts of Auckland. Many areas are also very wet due to rain.
Unit water supply
In below-freezing temperatures, your water pipe could freeze. If you go to use the water and nothing comes out, or the flow is a lot less than normal, your pipes might be frozen.
When the pipe warms during the day, the water flow should return to normal.
If you are experiencing problems with your water pipe freezing, there are solutions to prevent it. A quick, cheap option is to insulate the water pipe (or hose) leading to your unit. There are products at both Bunnings and Mitre 10 that will do the job. For example, Thermasmart is a cost-effective option that you can install yourself. Just make sure you get the right diameter so that your existing pipe/hose will fit inside.
Dampness inside your cabin
The air is very damp this time of year. Having a damp cabin can lead to mould. Below are some tips to help keep your unit dry:
- On sunny days, open your windows to ventilate the unit. Opening windows and doors on wet days can make your unit damp.
- Use a dehumidifier with the windows and the ranch slider closed. Running the dehumidifier with windows/doors open reduces efficiency.
- Always use the fan in the bathroom when you are showering. If the fan makes no sound, it may not be working. Contact us if you think the fan isn’t working.
- Keep areas dry. If condensation forms on the windows or walls, dry it off with a towel immediately. If condensation is not dealt with daily, it can cause damp carpets and furnishings and black mould on the walls and ceiling of your unit.
- Let sunlight in. Sunlight will help kill off the mould and mildew spores.
- If your transportable cabin has a kitchen, keep the windows open while cooking.
- Keep mattresses off the ground.
- Avoid drying laundry indoors.
Water around and under your cabin
Standing water around or underneath your unit can increase dampness inside by adding moisture to the surrounding ground and air. If possible, improve drainage to direct water away from your unit. This may be as simple as digging a shallow drain or channel to divert rainwater, or clearing existing drains so they can flow freely. Reducing standing water can help keep your unit drier and reduce the risk of condensation and mould.
