Can WINZ help me to rent a cabin?
Cabin hire from Unit2rent
If you’re struggling to cover your accommodation costs and have access to a suitable area of land (such as your family’s back garden), then renting a transportable cabin with WINZ assistance might be the perfect solution.
According to the WINZ website, you may be eligible for an accommodation supplement if you:
- Have accommodation costs
- Are 16 years of age or over
- Are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
- Normally reside in New Zealand and intend to stay here
- Are not paying rent for social housing such as that provided by Kāinga Ora or other approved community housing providers
Eligibility is also dependent on how much you and your partner earn and what assets you own.
To find out if you can use your accommodation supplement to rent one of our WINZ approved cabins, you simply need to complete our WINZ quote application form and provide us with photo ID, proof of your current address, and written consent from the legal landowner of the proposed site of your cabin. We’ll perform credit and site checks as well as making sure we have a suitable cabin in stock, and then we’ll get back to you with a quote.
There will be some upfront costs involved, which will depend on the size of the cabin and where you’d like it installed, as well as a week’s rent in advance (which WINZ can reimburse) and a service fee. WINZ will often also cover delivery, but as each case is assessed individually, it pays to check with them first.
Our self-contained cabins with kitchen and toilet facilities start at just $245 per week (at the time of writing) – that’s a great saving when compared to the cost of renting a one-bedroom property in Auckland, which is currently $350 - $5001. They’re all fully insulated, painted and carpeted, and ready to be connected up to power, water, and waste services.

What do I need to do before my cabin arrives?
Firstly, you need written consent from the landowner to situate your cabin there. Also, it’s important to check with your local council to see if there are any permissions you need to obtain for your specific site. If you’re connecting your cabin to power and water, we require you to have a 16amp caravan connection and a garden hose on site. If you would like to plumb a toilet in, you’ll need to employ a qualified drain layer to connect to the relevant wastewater facilities. Lastly, to enable the delivery of your transportable cabin, your site will need a minimum of 4m wide and 4.5m high clearance. If it’s a sloping section, then you might also need to get it levelled first. Further details can be found on our FAQ page.
