How do macerator pump toilets work?
When the toilet is flushed, the waste is directed to the macerator system, which activates automatically. Rotating blades mix the waste with water to form a slurry. This slurry is then pumped upward through a piping system to your existing main plumbing stack. Although this process occurs out of sight, you might hear a humming noise.
The primary difference between macerating pump toilets and conventional toilets lies in how the waste is transported to your septic tank or sewer line. Traditional gravity-flush toilets rely on gravity to move waste through the plumbing system. However, gravity-fed toilets are ineffective for rooms below the main plumbing lines. Macerating pumps allow for waste to be pumped up so toilets can be placed at lower levels that the septic or sewer location.
A macerator pump also reduces the size of the waste before it enters the septic or sewer system.
What are the parts of a macerator toilet?
The macerating toilet system includes a toilet bowl, a macerator pump, and a small-diameter pipe.
When you flush the toilet, the waste and toilet paper are directed into the macerator pump, which grinds the solids into a fine slurry. This slurry is then pumped through the small-diameter pipe to the sewer line or septic tank.
Best practices to prevent a blockage in your transportable cabin's macerator pump
- Flush only appropriate waste: Only human waste and standard toilet paper should be flushed through your toilet macerator.
- Avoid flushing non-biodegradable materials: Never flush sanitary products, baby wipes, or similar items that are not biodegradable.
- Use less toilet paper: Limit the amount used per flush.
- Regular cleaning: Clean the system regularly with toilet cleaner.
- Check for leaks and damage: Regularly inspect the system for any signs of leaks or damage.
- Proper installation: Ensure the system is correctly installed by a qualified plumber.
Keep in mind that all water that leaves your unit goes through the macerator pump behind your toilet (sinks, shower, toilet).
How to tell if your transportable cabin's macerator pump is not working correctly
- There is a bad odour coming from the tank.
- The pump stops working intermittently.
- The water isn’t draining away properly.
- The motor won't stop running.
- Foul water comes up in the shower.
- The system is leaking.
